“[Christ] himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.” – Hebrews 2:14-15
The “same things” here is flesh and blood—ie, full humanity—and everything that comes with them, especially weakness, suffering, and death. The one who upholds the universe with the word of His power (Hebrews 1:3) took these things on so that, by joining us in our suffering, death, and curse, He might break the power of these things in our lives by decisively breaking the grip that Satan has on the fallen people of God.
At the cross, when the damning blade of Death was plunged into the Son of God, the Adversary’s hands were shattered, his grip on Death was broken, and the sword that once held all of humanity in slavery to fear clattered to the ground. And now, having cleansed it of its condemning power for His people, the Risen Christ holds the sword of Death in His sovereign hands (John 21:22, Revelation 1:18) and wields it in perfect accordance with the love by which He bore it, so that those who have trusted in Him need no longer live in fear.
