Psalm 9:10, “…those who know your name put their trust in you.”

As I’ve said many times in different blog posts and articles before, the “Name” of God denotes His character or identity. When David talks about those who know YHWH’s name, he’s not referring to those who can pronounce the name, or those who can write it; rather, he’s talking about those who KNOW the Lord Himself—who know His character, His ways, His identity. Those who KNOW the Lord for who He is WILL be those who trust in Him.

And how do we know Him? How do we hear His name? In His word. The pages of scripture—illumened By the Spirit—are like the leaves of the burning bush from which we hear the Name of God. But more than that, at the heart of scripture and the heart of reality, we hear God’s name spoken definitively in the man, Jesus of Nazareth.

Yes, ultimately, God’s Name—His character, His identity, His beauty—is this man. His life, His ministry, His teaching, and most supremely, His death and resurrection…..His crucifixion in our place, His swallowing up of our death and damnation, His bearing in Himself the maddening annihilation of separation from God; and His rising again, His return, His securing in Himself joy as the end of every song…..THAT is God’s name, that is the Name of YHWH. And those who know Him there, those who know the Father, in the Son, by the Spirit—they are the ones who will put their trust in Him.

May we have grace today to know again the Name of the Only God in Jesus Christ….and knowing our God there, seeing our God there, may we hope in Him with all our hearts. This God does not forsake those who seek Him, He is a refuge for any and all who cast themselves on Him, and He has overcome the world.
