This picture was created at the request of a friend and monthly supporter of Full of Eyes. Because I was trying to bring his vision to life, the visual style and content is very different from my normal pictures, but that’s part of the benefit I find in creating pictures for other people….I am pushed to use art in ways I might not have done on my own.
This one isn’t based on a specific passage, so I do not have the typical passage/picture explanation. The idea mostly came from the supporter themselves, and is based largely on Jesus’ words in Matthew 6:19-21,
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (ESV)
The one thing I will mention by way of explanation is that the saint is shown looking full in the face of Christ and his face is illuminated by his savior’s face. This is a visual echo of a few passages, most notably 2 Corinthians 3:18 (where our beholding of the glory of Christ is the means for our sanctification), 2 Corinthians 4:6 (where our beholding the glory of God in the face of Jesus is presented as the moment of our regeneration), Colossians 3:1-4 (where the fixing of our minds and desires on Christ is presented as the means for fighting the desires of our flesh), and 2 Peter 2:20 (where “knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” is presented as the means for escaping the “defilements of the world”).
When we–by the Spirit–behold by faith the glory of the one true God in the person of Jesus Christ, the alluring power of this world’s treasures is broken and we are set free to use those treasures as the needs of His Kingdom should lead us…..may it be so for us more and more!
